Ring created using Functy and printed by Shapeways. It was created as an anniversary gift for my wife to celebrate 12 years of marriage. I always wanted to create a piece of jewellery for her, but lack of dexterity meant I thought I'd never be able to before discovering 3D printing.
The image shows (clockwise from top left) the OpenGL Functy render, a 3D test print in WSF, the final ring printed in silver and a Blender cycles render.
The ring is constructed from 6 parametric curve threads each with a formula of the following form:
x = (8.5+((1+A*cos(B*4*a*(2*pi)))/2))*cos(a*(2*pi)), y = (8.5+((1+A*cos(B*4*a*(2*pi)))/2))*sin(a*(2*pi)), z = A*2.5*cos(B*2*a*(2*pi))+(1-A)*(1+A)*((2*B)-3)*2.5, r = 0.5, where A ∈ {0, 1, -1}, B ∈ {1, 2} and the parametric variable a ∈ [0, 1].
Thanks Esterhase. I'm really pleased you like it. My strategy when designing it was to approach it with no prior ability whatsoever. If I'd thought about it, it would have made things much harder!
Your comment suggests you've designed some jewellery, but I don't see any in your gallery. You've got some great line drawings though.
Thanks, I really appreciate you saying so. The design is actually a lot more structured (and symmetrical) than it looks in the images, so they're a bit deceptive.
I'm a huge sucker for symmetry in art. I don't know, it's just the way my brain sees things. I read somewhere that the more symmetrical a human face is, the more beautiful the person is perceived to be (in the eyes of others). So I guess it has something to do with human nature, and the perception of beauty, as our brain tells us it "should" be. The ring is absolutely beautiful to me, and I'm sure your wife was thrilled by it. How proud you must feel, having created it for her with yourself. Fantastic. Congratulations, by the way, and best of luck to you both in the future. By the way, the Blender render of the ring is excellent. Great work all around.
